Turning a Shed into a Tiny House: The Ultimate Guide

turning a shed into a tiny house

He has helped more than 75,000 homeowners design and install custom carports and garages over the last 20 years. With limited spacing, you can choose multifunctional furniture such as futons and fold-down tables. Smaller appliances are also ideal, like a mini-fridge or portable electric burner. After the foundation is set, you can install the shed and begin the conversion. Consider incorporating these into the house's design, so you know where they are, but they don't detract from the overall aesthetic value of the home. If your home has a second story, consider hollowing out the stairway and using it as a bookcase.

Insulation

This tiny house began life as a Tuff Shed and was finished up by its owners, who had very little construction experience. Sue also lives in a 464 square-foot cabin built by the same company that made the shed. She hasn't needed to secure any permits, or pass any inspections, to live in these buildings. In this article, I'll answer these three questions, and show you ten examples of tiny house shed builds. If possible, install more durable flooring in your shed room (cork, tile, carpet, and much more is suitable), and lay down a rug for greater comfort. A good wood floor can typically be restored, but it’s a big project.

Garage Sizes

When installing these items, it's best to start with a solid base layer, like wall anchors or screws, so the furniture will be securely mounted. Be sure to take into account the weight of whatever you're mounting; heavier items may require additional support. If you're looking for a cleaning project this weekend, why not focus on your shed? It can be easy to overlook the shed, though regular maintenance will help it stay in good condition and extend its life.

Benefits of a Tiny Home Conversion: Embracing Minimalist Living

The house has a giant water tank that collects rainwater from the roof, which the couple uses for everything in their home. For example, when selecting a roofing material, you’ll likely have to choose between steel and aluminum. While an aluminum roof is superior for heat disbursement – as it reflects heat off the structure, therefore keeping it cooler inside – it is thinner and more pliable. This means you cannot place a structure with an aluminum roof underneath a tree, otherwise falling debris and branches during a storm can damage it.

Metal Utility Building Uses and Sizes in 2022

Remember that moisture and mold may be a problem if the floor isn’t properly protected. Many storage sheds and (hopefully) livable sheds will have leftover storage space like shelves, hooks and bins—and that’s a good thing! Convert this utility storage space for other purposes, such as holding books, organizing hobby paraphernalia and displaying décor. Think twice before tearing out any shelves or storage spaces if you can still put them to good use! Many people want to live in a shed while they are building the permeant house.

And some shed manufacturers provide financing options themselves. I often advise those who are short on time to speed up their builds by buying tiny house shells. Sheds can heat up in a hurry, even if it’s not mercury-boiling hot outside, so installing a window air conditioner is an easy way to make your shed a more comfortable space for spending time. The other advantage to these houses is that you can move them! Not as easily as a house on a trailer, but it’s possible. This is because they deliver these sheds on flat beds or even tow trucks sometimes.

Get ceilings and walls insulated

Failure to comply with local building codes and zoning laws can result in fines, legal issues, and safety hazards. The first step in converting your shed into a tiny home is to add insulation. Insulation helps keep your tiny home warm during the winter and cool during the summer. By insulating the walls, roof, and floor, you’ll create a cozy environment that’s energy-efficient as well.

Converting a Shed to a Tiny House

It costs from $300,000 to $500,000 to set up 40 or 50 homes, depending on the sewer connection, Lee said. Portable toilets initially used have been replaced by permanent bathrooms and showers. Ortiz has a new bed with pillows and, beside one of the four windows, there's a house plant that she's been taking care of. For the first time in years, she said she is able to sleep through the night. She has a door that locks, and no one around to harass her. Pressure treated floors are also a must in order to ensure the wood does not decompose.

Understanding the Shed Transformation Process

You can make it a guest house, extra living space, and more. Peter is a true inspiration for anyone looking to live a sustainable, debt-free lifestyle that is in harmony with nature. Unlike most people, he chose to break away from the traditional norms of society and build his own mortgage-free tiny home.

A tiny house is a detached house, usually 400 square feet or less, often located on the same property as a larger home. A tiny house is a type of structure called a detached accessory dwelling unit (DADU). Combining public and private funds, the nonprofit now manages 550 tiny homes in villages on public property, private property and church property around the Seattle area.

The initial contract attracted only one bid, which came in about $430,000 over estimate. Admittedly, simply reading the word "shed" might conjure visions of craft stations and tools as far as the eye can see, but this Yardline structure can be so much more. It features a 96-inch set of double doors that are 48-inches wide, and three operable windows that can be placed however you'd like. This pick even comes with an optional floor, so it can turn into an extra play area for your kids or as a fitness studio if you love to workout. Thanks to its generous 12-foot-by-24-foot floor plan, too, this structure is incredibly roomy. Lucy lives in a small cottage on the edge of Tasmanian woodlands that she and her father brought back to life after nearly 30 years of disrepair.

They even have these little crawler machines to maneuver the shed into place where a truck might not be able to get into tight back yards. Getting electricity in your shed is slightly trickier because this is the part where code officials start to get warry you’re planning on living in the shed. That said, it’s not uncommon to want to have power in a shed for tools etc. What I suggest you do is get your water installed on the land so it’s about 20 feet into the property, wait a few weeks while you get your shed pad graded and shed dropped off. Fortunately, you can get water to most properties without much hassle.

Copycat Waffle House Hash Browns Recipe

hashbrown bowl waffle house

Add tomatoes as your side and opt for wheat toast, and you've got a decently well-balanced meal. However, we know the sodium is still incredibly high, so forgo too much coffee and focus on hydrating your body during and after your meal. Waffle House offers only two specialty options in its lunch and dinner hashbrown bowls category. Diners can choose between the cheesesteak melt and chicken melt bowls, or you can create your own with a variety of toppings.

Lighter Waffle House Hashbrowns

To keep your order as nutritious as possible, stick to wheat toast and sliced tomatoes for your sides, or skip the sides altogether. On the Waffle House lunch menu, it's one of the lighter options out of the burger/Texas melt categories. Under 500 calories and chock full of protein, the original Angus burger is also half the sodium count of many breakfast and lunch options. If you're hoping to add a bit more nutritional value to your meal, you can ask for lettuce, tomato, and onion on top, and a side of grilled tomatoes. Eating out with a large family is expensive, so we love finding shortcuts to enjoy our favorite restaurant foods at home. Waffle House is one of our favorite places to go, and their hashbrown bowls are a family favorite.

Chicken Melt Hashbrown Bowl

If you just want plain ol’ hash browns, order yourself a regular ‘browns, scattered. Waffle House offers beverages for every meal from milk and coffee for breakfast to soda and iced tea for lunch and dinner. Diners can choose from any number of Coca-Cola sodas, as well as other juices. That’s our recipe for a great lunch or dinner, served up any time you like. Pork can be a healthy addition to a balanced diet, providing nutrients that are hard to get from plant-based diets alone, like vitamin B12, iron, and zinc.

What makes the Waffle House Hashbrown Bowl so unique?

The two-egg breakfast with two scrambled eggs contains 180 calories, 14 g fat, 4 g saturated fat, 2 g carbs, 2 g sugar, 12 g protein, and 120 mg sodium. If you order wheat toast and sliced tomatoes (the most nutritious sides), you'll add 220 calories for the toast and 10 calories for the tomatoes. The hashbrown bowls include a large order of hashbrowns, along with a protein of your choice, two scrambled eggs, and two slices of American cheese.

✗ Peanut Butter Chip Waffle

Surprisingly, Waffle House's Cheesesteak Melt Hashbrown Bowl is the healthiest option out of both the restaurant's classic dinner and hashbrown bowl categories. At under 650 calories and with ample protein, this bowl comes with hashbrowns, melted American cheese, thin-sliced chuck cheesesteak, and grilled onions. These bowls are also a great option compared to the bigger, more robust "dinner" plates, and this sort of portion control can help contribute to proper weight management.

Hashbrown Bowls also make great ‘breakfast for dinner’ meals, especially if you opt for the Chicken Melt or Cheesesteak Melt topping options. From there it takes highly-skilled grill operators in your Waffle House restaurant to turn the spuds into something even more legendary. Our supplier, Basic American Foods, works with potato farmers in Idaho to grow the foundation for Waffle House hashbrowns.

✗ Sausage, Egg, & Cheese Biscuit

Although this dinner contains a high amount of protein, the calorie and sodium content make it the least nutritious option. They include an egg-only or egg and cheese option, as well as protein offerings such as T-bone and sirloin steak with eggs. If you’re looking for nutrient-rich foods, you won’t have a large number of choices. Waffle House's salads are options if you're looking for foods with more nutrients and fewer calories or fat. You can also remove the bun from the sandwiches if you're trying to eat low-carb. The Texas grilled chicken melt, which may seem like a lean and nutritious option, is actually quite sodium-packed.

When the hashbrowns are done, scoop them out and place them in the bottom of a 13×9 pan and place slices of American cheese on top. Spread a layer of hashbrowns in the pan and cook for about 3-4 minutes without stirring. Dehydrated hashbrown potatoes are a must for this recipe, but if you can’t find the Hungry Jack brand, use one that is similar. Waffle House sells its own brand of dehydrated hashbrown potatoes if you want the most authentic flavor. The lingo, according to the restaurant chain, first gained traction in the mid-1980s. My life changed when I realized that healthy living is a lifelong journey, mainly won by having a well-balanced diet and maintaining an active lifestyle.

Waffle House also offers an "all-the-way" option for its famous hashbrowns, which features all the toppings piled on top of the fried potatoes. The kid's cheeseburger contains 705 calories, 44 g fat, 17.5 g saturated fat, 59 g carbs, 5 g sugar, 17 g protein, and 1,010 mg sodium. The healthier choice between the kid's burger and sandwich options, however, is a kid's grilled cheese instead with a side of hashbrowns.

Once the eggs are nearly cooked to your desired consistency, add the cheese to melt over the egg and spinach mix. Cover the skillet, remove from the heat and allow the steam from the food to melt the cheese. A small slice of Southern pecan pie contains 260 calories, 13 g fat, 7 g saturated fat, 32 g carbs, 23 g sugar, 2 g protein, and 140 mg sodium. Anyone with food allergens should skip this pie, as it contains soy, wheat, egg, milk, and tree nuts. The "Original" Angus hamburger contains 465 calories, 33 g fat, 12.5 g saturated fat, 30 g carbs, 5 g sugar, 11 g protein, and 520 mg sodium.

Add vegetables, including grilled onions, grilled tomatoes, and grilled mushrooms to increase the fiber content of the meal. The Texas melts on the Waffle House menu are grilled cheese and meat sandwiches served on Texas toast. All of the options contain a meat so there is no vegetarian choice here, but you can choose the most nutritious protein for you depending on flavor and preference.

The cheesesteak option has 650 calories, 40 g fat, 17 g saturated fat, 42 g carbohydrates, 28 g protein, and 1,400 mg sodium. Waffle House is kid-friendly, with a breakfast menu for children that includes kid-size bacon and sausage. The establishment also offers a kid-size cheeseburger and grilled cheese, and both come with a side of hashbrowns instead of the traditional fries. The Texas bacon, egg, & cheese melt contains 730 calories, 51 g fat, 20 g saturated fat, 39 g carbs, 10g sugar, 26 g protein, and 1,680 mg sodium.

Then put the pan in the oven and let the cheese melt while you continue cooking the rest of the hashbrowns (it usually takes me 3 batches). Your Meal Selections

Peanut butter chips contain the most carbs and sugar of any of the waffle toppings. If you need something crunchy on your waffle, ordering the pecan topping can perhaps fulfill that craving. Although higher in fat than peanut butter chips, these nuts do offer healthy fat. For those who prefer a topping sweeter than pecans, the chocolate chip waffles have half the fat of peanut butter chip waffles and no sodium.

Best: Build Your-Own Chicken and Veggie Omelet with Tomatoes and Wheat Toast

The sausage, egg, & cheese biscuit has 650 calories, 48 g fat, 22 g saturated fat, 35 g carbs, 2 g sugar, 19 g protein, and 1,470 mg sodium. For meat lovers, ordering the bacon biscuit instead can stave off extra calories and fat. If you're looking for the most nutritious option at Waffle House, look no further than the two-egg breakfast with scrambled eggs, which deliver healthy protein for relatively few calories. The unhealthiest sandwich on the Waffle House menu is their Texas Bacon Lover's BLT which is packed with 17 grams of saturated fat, nearly your entire day's worth of sodium, and 6 grams of sugar.

Waffle House Egg and Spinach Scramble

Thankfully, Waffle House is incredibly transparent when it comes to the nutritional value of its dishes. The restaurant chain's website offers nutrition calculators for both its breakfast and lunch/dinner menus. With this tool, you can customize your order to align with your health goals and understand exactly what you're consuming before placing your order.

✗ Triple Hashbrowns All-the-Way

While water will always be the most nutritious and hydrating option, this iced tea delivers 0 calories, 0 g fat, 0 g carbohydrates, 0 g protein, and 0 mg sodium. A "regular" slice of triple chocolate pie has 880 calories, 42 g fat, 14 g saturated fat, 120 g carbs, 69 g sugar, 8 g protein, and 660 mg sodium. The kid's one scrambled egg contains only 90 calories, 7 g fat, 2 g saturated fat, 1 g carbohydrate, 1 g sugar, 6 g protein, and 60 mg sodium. However, what's less appealing—but not entirely surprising—is the lack of nutritional value in many Waffle House dishes. Sure, you're probably not going to the Waffle House for a salad, but it's good to have healthier options in your back pocket to avoid feeling sluggish post-meal.

With its diner-like environment, Waffle House is also a favored joint for late-night hangover eats, such as hamburgers and non-stop cups of coffee and Coca-Cola beverages. Rather than order a large entrée, you can choose a few Waffle House breakfast sides to make a meal when you're not exceptionally hungry. When finished, place the eggs in the oven (either in the pan, if it’s oven-safe, or in another oven-save container) to stay warm.

Easy to make, hearty, and delicious, Hashbrown Bowls are a great option when you have to feed a crowd on the cheap. And since they are so simple to customize, everyone can enjoy something they want without a lot of extra work.

The ingredients on several sandwiches include a mix of grilled cheese, chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and/or country ham. Although it's not the most nutritious sandwich option, you will get a filling 26 grams of protein. The cheese omelet is the most nutritious option out of this menu category and includes 500 calories, 46 g fat, 17 g saturated fat, 3 g carbohydrates, 17 g protein, and 620 mg sodium. These nutritional counts are for the omelet only; any additional sides will add to the overall nutrition of the meal. The Texas Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Melt with a side of hashbrowns is by far the unhealthiest choice when it comes to Waffle House's breakfast sandwich selection.

Waffle House’s Sausage Egg and Cheese Hashbrown Bowl has two scrambled eggs, crumbled sausage, and two pieces of American Cheese. The restaurant chain actually claims there are 1,572,864 possible hash brown combos, which isn’t totally a lie. The number considers Waffle House’s four hash brown preparation methods (plain with oil, seared well, steamed with ice or cooked dry), three sizes and 18 additional ingredients (think ketchup, jalapeños, etc.).

Just like other menu items, you can also request for your potatoes to be "well done," if that's your fancy. Waffle House hash browns are famous for all the ways you can order them. Each Hashbrown Bowl comes with a double portion of Waffle House’s famous hashbrowns as a base and then adds a variety of toppings. Add the cheesy eggs to the hashbrown bowl, or enjoy them as part of a balanced (breakfast) meal. Once the spinach has completely wilted and reduced in size, about 2 minutes, add the eggs to the skillet.

Enjoy this as part of the hashbrown bowl, OR as a part of balanced (breakfast) meal. If you have food allergies, read the menu and nutrition facts ahead of time. You can find this information online in Waffle House's full nutrition information. If you have any concerns, stick with ordering a salad or only make a trip to the Waffle House on special occasions to get your fill of waffles and maple syrup. This is especially true for those with eggs, dairy, and gluten allergies as most popular breakfast foods include these ingredients in some form. If you'd like a beverage with a bit of flavor, order Alice's unsweet iced tea.

The chain, which claims to have sold its billionth waffle sometime in 2015, recently saw both of its founders, Tom Forkner and Joe Rogers Sr., die within just two months of one another. Here now, a look back at the legend, and for fans near and far, everything you need to know about Waffle House. No 24-hour diner chain inspires quite the same cult following as Waffle House.

For many years, the Degas family spelled their name "de Gas"; the preposition "de" suggesting a land-owning aristocratic background which they did not actually have. Each of the nine guest rooms has a private bath and a number of welcoming amenities. The elegant setting is also available for rental as a venue for private parties, weddings, and receptions for up to 250 persons. New Orleans very nearly lost the Degas house, which was built out of sturdy cypress in the early 1850s.

The paint was concealed by being carried in water bottles the pair brought into the museum. Smith and her co-conspirator had recorded video statements before the vandalism, which incurred over $4,000 in repairs, according to the government. From a stolen Degas to Ansel Adams negatives at a garage sale, we uncover more tales of art gone astray. As part of the Met's Open Access policy, you can freely copy, modify and distribute this image, even for commercial purposes.

Early Life

He also continued to paint dancers, contrasting the awkward humility of the dancer backstage with her majestic grace in the midst of performance. Edgar Degas studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and became renowned as a stellar portraitist, fusing Impressionistic sensibilities with traditional approaches. Both a painter and sculptor, Degas enjoyed capturing female dancers and played with unusual angles and ideas around centering. His work influenced several major modern artists, including Pablo Picasso. Anyhow, this is just a 7 minute bus ride away from the French Quarter.

Legacy with Édouard Manet

It is classified as an “after Degas” rendition, and the unknown sculptor took liberties with Degas’ original design. A bronze reproduction of Edgar Degas' most famous sculpture, "Little Dancer of Fourteen Years," was unveiled outside the Degas House on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2017. The date marked the 100th anniversary of the famous artist's death in Paris. We continue to research and examine historical and cultural context for objects in The Met collection.

Also offering drawing and painting classes. In 1886, at the eighth and final Impressionist exhibition in Paris, Degas exhibited 10 paintings of nude women in various stages of bathing. These nude paintings were the talk of the exhibition and also the source of controversy; some called the women "ugly" while others praised the honesty of his depictions.

Degas was born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar de Gas on July 19, 1834, in Paris, France. (As an adult, Degas reverted his last name back to the original spelling.) His father, Auguste, was a banker, and his mother, Celestine, was an American from New Orleans. Their family were members of the middle class with nobler pretensions.

After Degas's death, his heirs found in his studio 150 wax sculptures, many in disrepair. They consulted foundry owner Adrien Hébrard, who concluded that 74 of the waxes could be cast in bronze. It is assumed that, except for the Little Dancer Aged Fourteen, all Degas bronzes worldwide are cast from surmoulages [fr] (i.e., cast from bronze masters).

In 1853, at the age of 18, he received permission to "copy" at the Louvre in Paris. (During the 19th century, aspiring artists developed their technique by attempting to replicate the works of the masters.) He produced several impressive copies of Raphael as well, studying the work of more contemporary painters such as Ingres and Delacroix. Degas returned to Paris in 1873 and his father died the following year, whereupon Degas learned that his brother René had amassed enormous business debts.

Wealthy Creole families like the Mussons composed of many new residents in the city, which experienced a boom prior to the Civil War. In 1862, Degas met fellow painter Edouard Manet at the Louvre, and the pair quickly developed a friendly rivalry. Degas grew to share Manet's disdain for the presiding art establishment as well as his belief that artists needed to turn to more modern techniques and subject matter.

A surmoulage bronze is a bit smaller, and shows less surface detail, than its original bronze mold. The Hébrard Foundry cast the bronzes from 1919 until 1936, and closed down in 1937, shortly before Hébrard's death. By the time he graduated from the Lycée with a baccalauréat in literature in 1853, at age 18, he had turned a room in his home into an artist's studio. Upon graduating, he registered as a copyist in the Louvre Museum, but his father expected him to go to law school. Degas duly enrolled at the Faculty of Law of the University of Paris in November 1853 but applied little effort to his studies.

He also painted a number of portraits of his relatives, and it was during this time that he began to explore a looser style of painting that would evolve into what we think of as Impressionism. Over the course of the next 12 years, the group staged eight such Impressionist exhibitions, and Degas exhibited at all of them. His most famous paintings during these years were "The Dancing Class" (1871), "The Dance Class" (1874), "Woman Ironing" (1873) and "Dancers Practicing at the Bar" (1877). In 1880, he also sculpted "The Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer," a sculpture so hauntingly evocative that while some critics called it brilliant, others condemned him as cruel for having made it.

In the 1920s, a developer cut the original mansion in half, intending to subdivide the property. Exhausted and disillusioned after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, young French artist Edgar Degas, like so many young men before and after him, retreated to New Orleans to let off some steam and relax. New Orleans, in particular, thrived in this climate of affluence and became the fourth largest city in the United States. The city responded to the pressures of its increasing population by expanding its borders. Enterprising developers purchased plantations surrounding the city that soon became neighborhoods filled with large houses and spacious grounds. As the largely residential French Quarter filled with growing families, wealthy Creoles like the Musson Family began to occupy this newly available housing, and the Esplanade Ridge Neighborhood was born. Degas’s mother died when he was a child, but he still had family in New Orleans, including his uncle, his brother René, and René’s wife Estelle, who had begun by this time to go blind (a fear that haunted Degas for the rest of his life).

To preserve his family's reputation, Degas sold his house and an art collection he had inherited, and used the money to pay off his brother's debts. A visit to the museum includes a documentary video with historical details on both the family and the artworks that Degas created while in New Orleans. The museum, breakfast, and mimosas are all complementary if you happen to be staying as a guest. The home he stayed in was built in 1852 by developer and architect Benjamin Rodriguez as one of the original homes in the Esplanade Ridge Neighborhood.

They are one of only two places in the United States to receive this designation from the French Ministry of Culture. Seven days a week, Prados and Moyer lead twice-daily tours of the Degas House property. The ground-floor room along Tonti Street where Degas painted features a reproduction of his studio. Built during the original development of the Esplanade Ridge Neighborhood, the Degas House dates from the early 1850s. During these years, directly prior to the Civil War, the South experienced a boom in both wealth and population.

In July 1870, the Franco-Prussian War broke out and the highly nationalistic Degas volunteered for the French National Guard. At the war's conclusion in 1871, the infamous Paris Commune seized control of the capital for two terrifying months before Adolphe Thiers reestablished the Third Republic in a bloody civil war. Degas largely avoided the tumult of the Paris Commune by taking an extended trip to visit relatives in New Orleans. During his visit with his family, Degas produced 22 paintings, including “A Cotton Office in New Orleans,” which depicted the work of his uncle Michael Musson and was the first of his paintings (and the first by any Impressionist) to be purchased by a museum.

With the country deeply divided between those in support of Dreyfus and those against him, Degas sided with those whose anti-Semitism blinded them to Dreyfus's innocence. His stance against Dreyfus cost him many friends and much respect within the typically more tolerant avant-garde art circles. It is the only home or studio of Degas anywhere in the world that is open to the public, beautifully restored and located on majestic Esplanade Avenue just eleven blocks from the famous New Orleans French quarter. The 18 works he created in New Orleans included portraits of several relatives. His uncle and two brothers are depicted in “A Cotton Office in New Orleans,” which became the first of his paintings to be purchased by a museum. Today, both halves of the house have been reunited under the ownership of Degas’s relatives and Musson descendants.

It would be a superfluous and thankless task to argue with critics or artists who refuse to acknowledge Manet, Monet, Degas. Degas chose his models among the washerwomen and ballet-girls of modern Paris, Rossetti borrowing his subjects from Dante. A major restoration was performed on the main house, which now serves as a bed and breakfast, while the other portion, which contained Degas’s studio and bedroom, has been restored to the way it would have looked during his visit. Degas lived well into the 20th century, and though he painted less during these years, he promoted his work tirelessly and became an avid art collector. He never married, though he did count several women, including American painter Mary Cassatt, among his intimate friends. This house is the only known home or studio of Degas that is open to the public. By 1868, Degas had become a prominent member of a group of avant-garde artists including Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, who gathered frequently at the Café Guerbois to discuss ways in which artists could engage the modern world. Their meetings coincided with tumultuous times in the history of France.

There are only 9 rooms, but all are traditionally decorated, so it's really like stepping back in time. There is usually a free Creole breakfast included in your stay, and a tour of the house which has 18 Degas paintings. Degas also displayed a remarkable skill for drawing and painting as a child, a talent encouraged by his father, who was a knowledgeable art lover.

If you have comments or questions about this object record, please complete and submit this form. Period furnishings are on display inside the house, re-creating the ambience of Degas' times. Degas’ time in New Orleans was brief but critical to his artistic development. In a letter written from New Orleans in February 1873, he expressed his desire to create art that would be “less complicated and more spontaneous.” That intent resulted in his emergence at the vanguard of the Impressionist movement. In 1872, he settled in at his uncle's rambling mansion at Esplanade Avenue and Tonti Street. During a sojourn of several months in the city, he produced 18 paintings and solidified New Orleans’ claim on yet another creative soul.

“Portrait of Estelle Musson Degas” is the only one of Degas’ 18 New Orleans paintings still in the city. It is part of the New Orleans Museum of Art’s permanent collection, purchased for $200,000 in the mid-1960s with money raised in part by bake sales. In the late 1800s Edgar Degas was one of the leading artists of the French Impressionist movement. However, his full talent in that genre didn't truly emerge until he spent a year with members of his family in New Orleans from 1872 to 1873. Bronze castings made from his original wax figure in the early 20th century are extremely valuable. But the statue acquired by the Degas House is of recent vintage, cast at a foundry in Europe and purchased through an art dealer.

While Degas's paintings are not overtly political, they do reflect France's changing social and economic environment. His paintings portray the growth of the bourgeoisie, the emergence of a service economy and the widespread entrance of women into the workplace. In 1855, Degas gained admission into the École des Beaux-Arts (formerly the Académie des Beaux-Arts) in Paris. However, after only one year of study, Degas left school to spend three years traveling, painting and studying in Italy. He painted painstaking copies of the works of the great Italian renaissance painters Michelangelo and da Vinci, developing a reverence for classical linearity that remained a distinguishing feature of even his most modern paintings. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is distinguished by the French Ministry of Culture.

Returning to Paris near the end of 1873, Degas, along with Monet, Sisley and several other painters, formed the Société Anonyme des Artistes (Society of Independent Artists), a group committed to putting on exhibitions free of the Salon's control. The group of painters would come to be known as the Impressionists (though Degas preferred the term "realist" to describe his own work), and on April 15, 1874, they held the first Impressionist exhibition. The paintings Degas exhibited were modern portraits of modern women — milliners, laundresses and ballet dancers — painted from radical perspectives. Upon returning to Paris in 1859, Degas set out to make a name for himself as a painter. It had very rigid and conventional ideas of beauty and proper artistic form and received Degas's paintings with measured indifference. Located near City Park among many other stately mansions along Esplanade Avenue, the recently restored Degas House was the home of Degas' maternal relatives, the Musson family, prominent cotton brokers in New Orleans.

In the mid-1890s, an episode known as the "Dreyfus Affair" sharply divided French society. In 1894, Alfred Dreyfus, a young Jewish captain in the French military, was convicted of treason on spying charges. Although evidence that proved Dreyfus's innocence surfaced in 1896, rampant anti-Semitism kept him from being exonerated for another 10 years.

"There’s the right to protest but not to cause chaos," he said in brief remarks from the White House. In his first comments on the topic, President Joe Biden said the demonstrations must remain free of violence and hate speech. The crowd continued to grow as the night wore on as more and more officers poured onto campus. Tensions heightened as officers with the Los Angeles Police Department and the California Highway Patrol worked to dismantle barriers built by demonstrators. “While Sam takes care of the operational side of things, I am super passionate about partnering with local shelters and creating a safe place for the pups,” Robinson said. SPCA added that they would be making a follow-up visit to check if improvements to the dog's living conditions have been made.

SPCA suggested to the owner ways to improve the dog's living environment, such as by getting a dog bed or using anti-slip mats indoors. The owner explained to SPCA that they kept the dog outside due to the floor indoors being too slippery, which would affect the husky's mobility as it has arthritis. In response to Mothership's queries, SPCA confirmed that a house visit was made to assess the situation. Her concerns mainly stemmed from the recent spell of hot weather to which the dog is exposed to, and believed that the dog was apparently not being brought indoors. Z claimed that SPCA told her that the dog is suffering from arthritis, and is unable to stand, drink, eat, urinate or defecate without assistance. Z claimed to have contacted the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), the National Parks' Board's (NParks) Animal Veterinary Services (AVS) and the police regarding the husky.

Roger Slatten had just left for work Friday when his friend called to tell him a tornado was spotted near his home in the Elkhorn area of Omaha. He turned around and called ahead to his brother, Royce Slatten, who was at the house, telling him to find their two dogs and get to the basement. Anti-Israel UCLA protesters request shields, helmets, vegan and gluten-free donations after violent campus clash

On Wednesday, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that Biden was “monitoring the situation closely” and that some demonstrations had stepped over a line that separated free speech from unlawful behavior. “We have law enforcement presence stationed throughout campus to help promote safety,” the university said in a statement. Ray Wiliani, who lives nearby, told the AP that he came to UCLA on Wednesday evening to support the pro-Palestinian demonstrators. Outside the encampment, a crowd of students, alumni and neighbors gathered on the campus steps, joining in pro-Palestinian chants. A group of students holding signs and wearing T-shirts in support of Israel and Jewish people demonstrated nearby. At least 15 protesters suffered injuries, and the tepid response by authorities drew criticism from political leaders like California Gov. Gavin Newsom, as well as Muslim students and advocacy groups.

Early Thursday morning, police methodically ripped apart the encampment’s barricade of plywood, pallets, metal fences and trash dumpsters and made an opening toward dozens of tents of demonstrators. Chants of "where were you last night" could be heard, referring to an attack by counter-protesters the previous night. Thursday's clash with police brought an end to a week-long protest calling on University of California officials to divest from Israel. At least, that seemed to be the premise, though I don’t think the one in the above photo was near a car wash.  It did however display uncommon courage by daring to sell hot dogs around the corner from Pink’s. As you can see, a Dog House was a small building that vaguely resembled a dog house…and I vaguely recall some had stools that looked like hydrants.

You must submit the RIHC Change of Employment Notice prior to beginning employment with a new Qualifying Institution. All items must be submitted before an application will be considered complete. Among those affected, officials say two people were transported to a local hospital in serious condition, 16 people were transported in fair condition and at least 37 individuals were treated and released on scene. A Los Angeles Metro Rail train and a University of Southern California bus collided on Tuesday, leaving at least 55 people injured and 2 individuals in critical condition, officials said.

The ensuing police crackdowns on pro-Palestinian encampments at college campuses have echoed actions decades ago against a much larger movement protesting the Vietnam War. The Democratic president broke days of silence on the protests with his remarks, which followed mounting criticism from Republicans who have tried to turn scenes of unrest into a campaign cudgel. By focusing on a law-and-order message while defending the right to free speech, Biden is grasping for a middle ground on an intensely divisive issue in the middle of his reelection campaign. LOS ANGELES - Hundreds of law enforcement officers breached and dismantled a pro-Palestine encampment early Thursday at the UCLA campus in Los Angeles, ending a nearly nine-hour standoff and resulting in at least 132 protesters in custody. Biden said that he did not want the National Guard to be deployed to campuses. Some Republicans have called for sending in troops, an idea with a fraught history.

You could dine inside at the counter or outside in a small porch area with tables. Pardon the pun, but a new Mid-City bar has really gone to the dogs, and in the best business way. The Dog House officially debuted in February, the creation of dog-loving business partners Samantha Chodlya and Kelly Robinson. The bar offers a place for dogs and their owners to connect, imbibe and relax in a safe, self-contained space. Roger Slatten suffered multiple bone bruises, cuts and was punctured in the back by a nail. Royce Slatten required 22 stitches, and he says it’s still painful to walk.

We got the dog, and that at the end of the day is what we’re concerned about, but now that the dog is safe, and we’re looking this over, it’s devastating,” he said. Arrest papers also said Hidalgo had taken a rifle case with the firearm in it from the Nau home, and the owner of the second home told officials he believed he heard a gunshot before he looked out the window and saw the vehicle on fire. Police said they found the rifle hidden under an RV at some point during their investigation.
